Acropora Species List
There at least 200 documented species in the Acropora genus and there are very likely dozens more waiting to be discovered, examined and classified. Differentiating between many of these species is devilishly difficult, even for experts, and ultimately, proper classification and identification for many of these species may come down to expensive and time-consuming genetic analyses. Other researchers, such as Dr. Charlie Veron, a revered coral scientist with decades of fieldwork and many coral species identified and taxonomically categorized, classify Acropora species from a morphological standpoint. Dr. Veron identified 38 specific groups of morphological commonalities and differences within the Acropora genus.
That link is worth a look to better understand why identifying different species can be so difficult, confounding, contentious, and often slow and bear in mind, this only looks at this genus from the morphological side of things. Genetic identification takes even more time and resources but leads to taxonomic discoveries that frequently cause new genus allocation altogether. The recent Acanthastrea/Micromussa name change exemplifies this very well.
However, for Acropora corals for sale online and in local fish and coral shops, there are around 20 fairly common species most often found and available for hobbyists. Here is a list of them and some of the common names often applied to them:
