Mushroom Corals For Sale Online

Mushroom polyp corals are soft corals that are an excellent choice for the beginner and expert alike. They are easy to care for, self-propagate under favorable conditions, and prefer areas in your display that many other corals don’t, making them a valuable, interesting and attractive addition to most any coral reef display. Our mushroom corals for sale online are mostly aquacultured in-house, which reduces collection pressure on wild reefs, allows us to carefully screen them for potential parasites and other unwanted hitchhikers and allows us to provide high quality ‘shrooms and other softies to our clients.

Mushroom Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

Mushroom corals are highly recommended for beginning coral enthusiasts, as they require very little care and are tolerant of the less-than-ideal water quality that a nascent coralhead might have in their system. ‘Shroom corals are also suitable for coral enthusiasts at any other level of accomplishment. It all depends on how you want your display to look!

Optimal Water Quality Parameters for Mushroom Corals

  • Temperature: 77-82F, 25-28C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Mushroom Coral Lighting Preferences:

Although some mushroom corals have higher numbers of photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissue and require a bit more light to be healthy and colorful, most mushroom polyps prefer low to moderate lighting. After acclimation, your best bet is to place your new ‘shroom somewhere on the substrate of your display, perhaps just under a ledge out of direct light. In time, you can begin moving your mushroom to areas with higher lighting levels but pay close attention to the turgidity, or “swollenness” of your polyp. If they look thin instead of full and lush, they are probably stressed and should be moved to another spot.

Water Flow Preferences for Mushroom Corals:

Mushroom polyps prefer areas with low to moderate flow. If placed in an area with too much flow, (particularly on the substrate, where they are only attached to a few grains of sand or pieces of crushed coral) they could get blown around like aquatic tumbleweeds and damage their delicate tissue.

Mushroom Coral Placement Considerations:

Mushroom polyps are semi-aggressive and will sting and damage sessile invertebrates like SPS or LPS corals, clams, and soft corals. Despite their appearance, they pack quite a potent sting, so be very mindful of this when placing them in your display and closely monitor them over time to ensure they don’t drift or propagate too closely to other animals. If conditions are favorable, they will occasionally split small offspring off the parent polyp, which grow to adult size in just a few months. With this in mind, it will probably be best if you segregate your ‘shrooms to their own rock, where they will be much less likely to harm other corals.

Mushroom Coral Feeding Considerations:

Although ‘shroom coral polyps are zooxanthellate and receive most of the nutrition they need from their symbiotic algae, they will also benefit from occasional feeding of plankton-type foods like marine snow and other commonly available coral foods. A note of caution: if you are providing additional nutrition to your mushrooms and other corals, always test your water quality regularly to ensure that you’re not overfeeding your system and trashing your water chemistry.

Vibrant, Healthy Online Mushroom Corals for Your Reef Aquarium

Although we only sell healthy mushroom polyps that have been rigorously screened before shipping, your newly arrived mushroom polyp may look shriveled and much smaller. This is simply due to moderate packing and shipping stress. After a sensible acclimation drip and introduction to your quarantine system or display, you should start seeing your ‘shroom taking in water and filling out in a day or two, with its subtle coloration slowly improving over the next several days and weeks, if conditions are appropriate. We take a great deal of pride in the corals we sell our clients and our online mushroom polyps are no exception. Thanks for trusting CoralFrags.com to provide all kinds of healthy corals for your collection!
