Gorgeous Online Rhodactis Corals to Add Color and Character to Your Reef Tank
Rhodactis mushroom corals are excellent beginner’s coral, as they are hardy, prefer lower, shaded portions of the display and add vibrant colors and cool textures to any reef tank. The stubby, rounded appearance of the contours of the oral discs of these corals lends itself to several different common names, such as Tonga mushrooms, hairy mushrooms, elephant ear ‘shrooms and others. Mostly native to the waters of the Indo-Pacific, Rhodactis corals are very easy to care for, as they are tolerant of less than ideal water quality, don’t require much lighting despite the zooxanthellae living in their tissue, and self-propagate without much additional care or targeted feeding.

Lighting Preferences:
Although the symbiotic zooxanthellae in some morphs can tolerate and even prefer slightly higher lighting, Rhodactis mushrooms generally prefer lower the lower levels under overhangs or on the substrate. After quarantine and acclimation, it’s best to add a new Rhodactis mushroom to a sheltered location on the bottom of your display and let it adjust before slowly allowing it to receive more light. Too much light too quickly could shock your new Rhodie, killing the beneficial algae living in its tissue and drastically altering its coloration.
Water Flow Preferences:
Your new Rhodactis coral will do best in areas with little water flow sheltered from inflows and powerheads. Flows that are direct and/or too strong will cause your Rhodactis to shrink and protect itself from damage and could cause it to get blown around and damage its tissue. The shrunken appearance not only makes it much less interesting to look at, it also starves the zooxanthellae from getting the limited amount of light it needs to feed the host coral.
Placement Considerations:
Eventually, your Rhodactis will self-select its preferred location and may begin to self-propagate but initially choose a sheltered spot on the substrate between chunks of live rock. However, bear in mind that Rhodactis corals can be pretty aggressive and will sting nearby corals. Their sting packs a pretty respectable punch so wherever you place them, pay very close attention to the color, posture and appearance of nearby corals, clams and other sessile inverts to ensure that you can move swiftly if you have to prevent damage.
Feeding Considerations:
Your Rhodactis mushroom coral really doesn’t require any supplemental feeding as long as it is getting the lighting it needs. However, if you want to experiment with direct feeding, softly adding a few brine shrimp, mysis or other type of small, wet protein to the oral disc with a pipette or baster every once in a while will be fine. However, your Rhodactis will eat slowly, so keep an eye out for marauding fish, shrimp, hermit crabs or other thieves that will pluck the food right off your mushroom! To prevent this, you can create a feeding shield by cutting the top off a plastic soda bottle and gently placing it over the coral after feeding.
