Hardy and Pretty Online Discosoma Mushroom Corals are Perfect for Beginners

Discosoma mushroom corals, also frequently referred to as mushroom polyps, ‘shroom polyps and occasionally but much less often called by their new genus name: Actinodiscus mushrooms, are popular with coral aquarists of all levels of accomplishment. More experienced coralheads love them, as they prefer the lower potions of rockwork where few other corals will thrive and the substrate of displays, where they also thrive and propagate. Hobbyists just starting out with corals also love Discosoma mushroom polyps, as they are hardy, easy to care for, and more tolerant of less than ideal water quality parameters than just about all coral species, including soft corals. Discosoma ‘shroom polyps are a type of coral called a corallimorph and true to the name, they come in a wide range of colors, textures and sizes.

Discosoma Mushroom Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

Our Discosoma mushroom polyps for sale online are great choices for people just starting out, provided their systems are cycled and their water quality parameters are somewhat stable. Despite their appearance, ‘shroom polyps are pretty aggressive little critters and pack a pretty serious sting, so take care when choosing your preferred location for them.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

‘Shroom polyps tend to prefer lighting most often found in the lower third of a reef display and will not tolerate high lighting levels for very long. After acclimation, choose a sheltered spot on the lower rockwork or substrate and shield them from flow for a day or two so they can attach to the rock or several pieces of the substrate to anchor them.

Water Flow Preferences:

Getting the flow dialed in for Discosoma polyps is pretty easy after the first few days. They usually attach with their pedal base and start importing system water into their tissue. However, if they are on the substrate, take care to ensure that the flows pass over them and help them stay in place. Flows that are too aggressive will cause them to move around the tank like tumbleweeds, which can damage them.

Placement Considerations:

As previously mentioned, these softies are pretty aggressive so don’t place them near anything that you don’t want to get stung. If you want them to settle and propagate in a specific location, consider making some kind of cover like the top cut off a 2-liter bottle that will allow a little flow while your new mushroom polyp settles in, attaches and spreads out a bit.

Feeding Considerations:

Your Discosoma polyps will occasionally catch a stray piece of brine, mysis, pellets, etc. that somehow evade your fishes, shrimps, crabs and other janitorial staff in your reef. That’s more than sufficient, as ‘shrooms generally thrive and self-propagate just fine without any targeted feeding.
