Heliofungia Plate Coral

Animate your Substrate with a Gorgeous Online Heliofungia Plate Coral

Long tentacle plate corals are becoming increasingly popular in reef exhibits around the world as they become more available to hobbyists and professionals. Heliofungia corals have the same shape and anatomy as Fungia plate corals with one big difference: the tentacles on Heliofungia are much longer and the price tag on Heliofungia coral frags tends to be quite a bit higher. These tentacles come in a variety of colors and often have differently colored tips, which resemble the polyps of torch corals somewhat as they are animated by the currents in a reef tank. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this long-tentacle mushroom coral is most often found on the sandy substrate in areas with moderate sunlight and currents.

Heliofungia Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

The experience level for Heliofungia plate corals depends a great deal on how stable the water quality parameters are in your reef system. If the system is fairly new, with modest or not-so-modest swings in dKH and other important parameters, you’ll need to be an expert to keep this coral species alive. If you monitor and proactively manage the water quality in your system, you’ll find our Heliofungia corals for sale online fairly easy to keep happy and healthy. Stability is absolutely essential for success with most coral species no matter the reefer’s experience level.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 33-35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Heliofungia prefers moderate lighting but can be acclimated to other levels over time with patience and careful observation. As always, much will depend on the type of lighting you have on your reef tank.

Water Flow Preferences:

Long-tentacle ‘shroom corals like Heliofungia tend to do best in areas with medium flow. Consider their preferred conditions in their natural habitat. They thrive in areas with enough flow to animate their tentacles and deliver the volume of planktonic foods they need but will not tolerate sustained flows that are too strong.

Placement Considerations:

Your best bet will be to place your new Heliofungia coral somewhere on the substrate of your exhibit in an area with moderate lighting. However, you’ll want to take great care on how close it is to other corals, as it can take on water and nearly double in size and the tentacles pack a toxic wallop. Also make sure that your Heliofungia is not within range of the sweeper tentacles of other aggressive corals, as they can sting and damage your plate coral, as well.

Feeding Considerations:

Your Heliofungia will do best when given small, regular feedings of brine shrimp, rotifers and Artemia nauplii, small chunks of fish and shrimp and other marine proteins. You’ll look forward to priming the feeding response with thawed mysis juice, reef plankton and other foods, as the oral opening in the center of the coral dilates and waits for the tentacles to deliver the protein. As much fun as it is to feed corals, always remember that those nutrients will have to be accounted for by additional maintenance and water changes to keep from trashing your water quality.
