Quality Anemones For Sale Online

Anemones of all species are simply captivating to watch as the currents animate their tentacles and their bodies are buffeted back and forth. Although anemones are not corals, and do not create any kind of skeleton, they do share a common ancestor way back in time and share some of the characteristics of corals. They have stinging cells called nematocysts in their tentacles that trap and immobilize prey like many corals and many species also host symbiotic and photosynthetic zooxanthellae in their tissue, which provide glucose and other nutrients for the host anemone. ‘Nems are an uncommonly successful life from and are found in most habitats around the world. You’ll find them at shallow depths of the intertidal zones in both tropical and temperate waters, as well as thriving on the ocean bottom under the polar caps, stinging, trapping and ingesting planktonic organisms borne on the current.

Online Anemone Care Guide

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Anemones should only be acclimated to fully cycled systems with stable WQ parameters. However, these animals are quasi-mobile and will move about to find the optimal location for themselves, indiscriminately stinging, killing and eating just about anything that they can, including fish!

Optimal Water Quality Parameters for Anemones

  • Temperature: 73-79F, 23-26C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Salinity: 30-35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 2 ppm

Anemones can be more forgiving of some less-than-perfect water quality parameters but will not tolerate them for long. If you plan to keep anemones in a display with coral species, maintain the typical concentrations of Ca, Mg, and other essential nutrients and your ‘nems will be fine. However, keep a very close eye on NH3 and NO3, as many anemones cannot and will not tolerate higher concentrations for long.

Anemone Lighting Preferences:

As previously mentioned, most anemone species have symbiotic algae in their tissue, which require higher lighting to remain healthy. Some species will move to the highest parts of the water column while others might prefer something in the middle to lower middle. Much will depend on the type of lighting you have, the age and output of the bulbs (if applicable) and the photoperiod. They will usually attempt to find the “sweet spot’ in your display by themselves.

Anemone Water Flow Preferences:

Anemones prefer medium to very strong flows, depending on the species. Although they can move, if they have chosen a spot that delivers a steady supply of planktonic food and lighting that is close to ideal, they are more likely to remain in that spot unless conditions change.

Anemone Placement Considerations:

If you’re planning a ‘nem-only tank, provide lots of rockwork for them to move on and their pedal base to adhere to. They’ll find their happy spot and may reward you by reproducing clone via binary fission or splitting. However, if you’re planning to add them to a system with sessile invertebrates like corals, clams and soft corals make sure to segregate them on a rock by themselves and without a means to migrate to other areas of the tank. Otherwise, they will move around like bulldozers, eating and killing pretty much anything in their path.

Also take extra care to ensure that they cannot move too close to the powerheads in your display. If a ‘nem moves too close and gets partially or entirely sucked into the impeller, this can kill the anemone and the tissue and toxins from the nematocysts (stinging cells) in the tissue can harm and kill the other inhabitants of the tank. The decaying tissue can also cause a massive NH3 spike, further endangering everything in your display.

Anemone Feeding Considerations:

Depending on your feeding habits and strategies, most ‘nems will get enough supplemental sustenance from the foods blown on and near them by powerheads while you’re feeding your fish and other animals. If you like, you can target feed them with small chunks of fish, clam, shrimp and other meaty foods but take care not to feed them too much. Overfeeding often results in decomposing food trapped in their body cavity making for a very ill and potentially very dead anemone. Also, be mindful to feed the tentacles and let them deliver the food, rather than placing the food directly into the opening on the oral disc. This is very delicate tissue that is easily injured.
