Our Cool Carpet Anemones Online are Available in a Wide Range of Colors

Carpet anemones are unlike more traditional anemones in several ways: Most mini-maxi carpet anemone species grow no larger than 6” or so across. Their tentacles are short and stubby instead of long and wispy. They tend to wander around in reef tanks looking for the perfect spot less than other ‘nems. And they tend to provide more colors within one anemone than, say, bubble tip anemones. When the little harpoon-like nematocysts in the tentacles fire to catch prey, they tend to pack more of a lethal punch than other types of anemones, as well. There are several types of online carpet anemones available for the aquarium trade. Some species are capable of getting quite large, with the largest reaching two and even three feet across. If you’re looking for carpet anemones for sale online, we’ll make sure that you know which species we offer, so you can plan accordingly.

Carpet Anemone Care Guide

Experience Level

Depending on the species, most carpet anemones are easy to keep, are fun to feed and some will even host Amphiprion clownfishes. However, as we mentioned, even the easy to keep species pack a powerful punch and can sting, trap and eat reef fishes, so keep that in mind while you’re considering adding one or two to your reef display.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

The lighting that your carpet anemone prefers will depend a great deal on the specific species. Some won’t tolerate less than intense lighting while others, particularly smaller mini-maxi ‘nem species, do well under most lighting conditions. All carpet anemones host photosynthetic algae in their tissue that provides nutrients to the host, so most species will wander about until they find a spot that’s just right.

Water Flow Preferences:

In addition to moving for preferred lighting, most carpet anemones will wander until they find the sweet spot for flow, as well. They want flows that will deliver food in the volume they need to survive and help them export the digested waste. Your best bet will be to start your new carpet anemone in a place with medium flow or better and let it find its own happy spot, but watch carefully to ensure it wander too closely to your prized corals and clams!

Placement Considerations:

This is where things get a bit tricky. Since carpet ‘nems are somewhat mobile and will sting pretty much anything that they can, your best bet will be to place them on a rock that is segregated from the rockwork with your corals, clams and other sessile inverts. If that’s not an option, you might get lucky with the initial placement and not have your anemone move much at all. But I wouldn’t count on it. They’re going to go (and sting) pretty much wherever and whatever they want to unless you make it difficult.

Feeding Considerations:

The zooxanthellae will probably not provide enough nutrition to keep your carpet anemone healthy, so plan on feeding it at least once per week with small chunks of fish, clam, shrimp and other meaty foods. Brine and mysis shrimp work well, also. Just make sure not to feed your carpet ‘nem while it is still digesting its previous meal or it can decompose inside and harm or kill your cool anemone with a bacterial infection. As much fun as it is to feed your carpet anemone and watch it eat, moderation is the key. Overfeeding anything can become a powerful stressor.
