Beautiful Rock Flower Anemones For Sale Online
Rock flower anemones, also occasionally called rock anemones or rock ‘nems, are especially pretty anemones native to the shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea. Usually found on the vertical surfaces of rocks or mostly buried in the sandy substrate, these anemones can found living alone or in densely populated clusters, where lighting, flow, and food availability are optimal. Like most other anemone species, rock flower anemones have symbiotic photosynthetic algae living in their tissue, which provide glucose and other byproducts of photosynthesis for the host. The edges of rock anemones have a frilly appearance, with stinging tentacles arrayed on the perimeter. These tentacles, along with the oral disc of the animal, feature an especially pleasing variety of color, which makes for a very attractive addition to most tanks, with a few caveats.
Rock Flower Anemone Care Guide
Experience Level
Beginner to intermediate. Rock anemones should be carefully acclimated to a mature, cycled quarantine system or display.
Optimal Water Quality Parameters for Rock Flower Anemones
- Temperature: 73-79F, 23-26C
- pH: 8.1-8.3
- dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
- Salinity: 30-35ppt
- Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): less than 2 ppm
Rock Flower Anemone Lighting Preferences:
Rock ‘nems ted to prefer lighting in the middle of the range, with some preferring exposure to brighter light and others favoring darker, more sheltered lighting. As always, begin by placing your recent acquisition somewhere in the middle and let its posture, color and appearance dictate where or if to move it higher or lower in the water column from there.
Rock Flower Anemone Water Flow Preferences:
Rock anemones prefer medium, shifting flows, which animate their feeding tentacles but usually will not tolerate strong direct flows for long. Remember that the tissue of these animals is fairly delicate and flows that are too aggressive may thrash the tissue against hard, unforgiving surfaces resulting in tears and possible infection. If this happens, the anemone will likely retract into the surrounding rock to heal and protect itself. As usual, observe closely after acclimation and refrain from making too many adjustments in short periods of time.
Placement Considerations for Rock Flower Anemones:
Rock flower anemones tend not to wander as much at other ‘nem species but they can and will if they find conditions not to their liking. As with other anemones, it’s highly recommended to place them away from corals and other sessile inverts and try to place them on a rock that is not connected to other rockwork if they decide to start wandering around. Although the sting of their nematocysts is considered less lethal than other anemone species, do not underestimate their ability to kill clams, corals and even small fish, shrimp and crabs if given the chance. After all, these animals need to make a living.
Rock Flower Anemone Feeding Considerations:
Rock anemones are carnivores and while they get some nutrition from the zooxanthellae living in their tissues, they will need supplemental feeding 1-2 times a week. If their tentacles are deployed around the perimeter, carefully place small protein such as brine shrimp, mysis, fish eggs, or small chunks of fish, clam and shrimp and let the tentacles deliver the food to the opening on the oral disc. Take care not to place food directly into the center with your fingers, feeding tongs or a pipette, as this can damage internal tissue. Also make sure that the chunk of food is not too large, as the ‘nem will likely ingest it but have difficulty digesting and expelling the remainder, which can decompose and threaten the health and life of the anemone.
