Irresistible Pocillopora Coral Frags For Sale Online

Pocillopora corals are some of the most important SPS coral species because they, along with Acropora species, provide the foundation of most coral reefs around the world. Over the millennia, the skeletons of Pocillopora damicornis in particular have been the building blocks for other coral species and provided the nooks and crannies essential for fish and invertebrates and overall reef health. Also occasionally called cauliflower coral for the shape the colony takes one as it grows, Pocillopora is a fairly hardy coral and can be one of the easier SPS species for coralheads just getting started with SPS corals, as long as their water quality parameters are good or better and they choose a suitable spot for their new Pocillopora frag. Experience Level

As previously mentioned, one or more of our Pocillopora frags can be a good choice for reefers just starting out with SPS but make sure that you and your system are properly cycled, with stable and near-ideal water quality parameters.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Pocillopora species prefer lighting from middling intensity on up. While this species can handle the intense lighting in the brightest parts of your display, make sure not to start your new frag there. After acclimation, it’s highly recommended to choose a spot with moderate lighting and then slowly move it higher over time to let the photosynthetic zooxanthellae living in the tissue adjust.

Water Flow Preferences:

Pocillopora will grow and provide the best polyp extension with medium shifting laminar flows. Too little flow and the polyps won’t fully extend: too much flow and the polyps will retract into the skeleton to protect themselves from damage. Experiment with different locations until you find the sweet spot for your new Pocillopora frag but make sure to observe carefully for at least two weeks before trying another spot. Placement Considerations:

Pocillopora is not an aggressive coral, so it can be placed next to other peaceful SPS species but make sure it is not within range of more aggressive corals or it will suffer repeated stings that can lead to a bacterial infection and the dreaded RTN (rapid tissue necrosis.)

Feeding Considerations:

Once it has fully acclimated to your quarantine tank or display, feed your Pocillopora frag with small, suitably sized coral foods once a week or at most three times in two weeks. Just make sure to monitor your WQ closely or you can love your reef to death with excess nutrients from the food!
