Add Color and Texture to Your Reef with Our Online Stylophora Coral Frags

Stylophora is an especially lovely SPS coral species commonly available in green and pink frags. What makes Stylophora so pleasing to the eye and the reef is the rounded shape of the tips of the branches as the colony grows. This contrasts nicely with the sharp grow points on the branches of other SPS species and the shaggy polyps of most LPS species. After all, the riot of different colors and shapes of a coral reef makes for a very engaging and uniquely satisfying reef display and that is the ultimate goal for pretty much any coralhead.

Stylophora Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

If you’ve achieved success with some of the easier SPS coral species, you may be ready to take on a Stylophora frag or two. Though not a difficult coral species to care for, Stylophora is intolerant of less than ideal water quality. We don’t recommend our Stylophora frags for those just starting out with corals but if you take good care of your system, test your water quality regularly and are ready for a modest challenge, go ahead and choose a couple Stylophora frags from our selection.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Stylophora prefers higher lighting levels but it also tolerant of lighting usually found in the middle to upper middle part of the display. If your Stylophora frags are showing good color and polyp extension after acclimation, you may wish to let them continue to grow and thrive where they are and reserve the highest portions of your reef for SPS frags for more demanding SPS species.

Water Flow Preferences:

While Stylophora tends to grow best in areas with strong shifting, laminar flows, your mileage may vary on this. Consider starting your new Stylophora frag in an area with medium or slightly stronger flow and observe it over time. If you are happy with the color, polyp extension and growth at its current location, leave well enough alone and start thinking about the next somewhat challenging SPS species.

Placement Considerations:

As long as your Stylophora colony is not within range of an aggressive coral, any spot among other peaceful SPS colonies should be fine. Just make sure to leave enough space for it and the other colonies to grow over time without crowding each other.

Feeding Considerations:

Supplemental feeding is not necessary for a happy and healthy Stylophora colony but occasional nighttime feedings of coral foods are encouraged, provided you stay on top of water quality testing and proactive system maintenance to keep your water, system and animals healthy.
