Our Seriatopora Coral Frags For Sale Online are Great SPS Corals for Beginners

When coralheads are talking about Seriatopora, they are usually talking about Seriatopora histrix, also called bird’s nest coral, for the shape the colony takes on as it grows. Seriatopora are one of the fastest-growing and easiest SPS coral species to care for and make an excellent choice for reefers ready to start caring for SPS species in their reef displays. There are other Seriatopora species commonly available but most reefers prefer S. histrix frags, for the color, shape and ease of care this species provides.

Seriatopora Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

Seriatopora coral frags tend to be a great SPS species for beginners, as they are among the easiest small polyp stony coral to care for and they grow well in a variety of lighting and flow conditions. That said, you’ll still want to make sure that your system is fully cycled, with stable water quality parameters before adding one or more of our Seriatopora frags to your quarantine system.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

For best results and the growth tips we all love so well, choose a spot in your display with high lighting levels. That said, you’ll also get decent growth, coloration and polyp extension in areas of your display with medium lighting. As always, much will depend on the type of lighting on your display and especially, how stable your WQ parameters are.

Water Flow Preferences:

You’ll achieve good growth and coloration with our online Seriatopora frags under many flow conditions but we recommend medium or stronger shifting, laminar flows for best polyp extension.

Placement Considerations:

Seriatopora is not an aggressive coral species, so after acclimation, choose a spot somewhere in the middle to uppermost part of your reef display near other SPS colonies. Just take care not to place it within the range of more aggressive corals or your Seriatopora colony can suffer stings that can lead to the dreaded rapid tissue necrosis (RTN) caused by a subsequent bacterial infection.

Feeding Considerations:

Seriatopora will thrive and grow well from the glucose and other nutrients provided by its symbiotic zooxanthellae but your colony will really take off with supplemental feeding of suitable coral foods once or twice a week.

Build Your Display and SPS Confidence with Online Bird’s Nest Coral Frags

Seriatopora is an excellent “gateway” beginner’s SPS species for all the reasons we’ve listed above. Once you’ve built some confidence with a couple Seriatopora frags in a couple of different colors and grown them out, you can buy other SPS coral frags and “branch out,” so to speak, with more challenging SPS frags while you watch your reef display really fill in and take off. If you’re ready and your system and water quality are ready for the next step, buy a couple Seriatopora frags and take your reefing to the next level. Thanks for looking!
