Neon Green Hammer Coral Care Guide
Experience Level
Neon green hammer frags are one of the better LPS corals for beginners as long as they understand that while pretty, these Euphyllia frags punch well above their weight in terms of reach and sting to nearby corals. If you’re fairly new to reefing, hammer corals send out mesentery filaments, also called sweeper tentacles, primarily at night to sting and trap food, as well as prevent other corals and sessile inverts from encroaching on the coral’s living space. Each filament contains lots of nematocysts (essentially, tiny venomous harpoons with proximity triggers), which can sting the daylights out of clams, corals and other critters and potentially kill them.
Optimal Water Quality Parameters
- Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
- pH: 8.1-8.3
- dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
- Calcium: 375-450ppm
- Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
- Salinity: 35ppt
- Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
- Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm
Lighting Preferences:
Depending in the type of lighting in your quarantine system and display, you’ll probably want to plan for locations that provide medium lighting. That’s the safest choice, although some experienced coralheads experiment with higher lighting levels, which can occasionally bring out tiny dots of purple and blue in the tips of the polyps. Be very careful when pushing the limits of light absorption. You could stress the coral, resulting in the expulsion of the photosynthetic algae living in the tissue and providing food, which results in a long recovery period. Or no recovery at all.
Water Flow Preferences:
Our neon green hammer frags and their resulting colonies tend to prefer medium to stronger shifting flows, depending on their overall health and, as always, the water quality in your system. If you’re experimenting with stronger flows, pay very close attention to polyp extension and fullness. If your polyps shrink or start to pull in from the margins of their skeletal base, reduce flows or move your frag to a more sheltered area.
Placement Considerations:
Your neon green hammer frag will tolerate or acclimate to a wide range of different flows and lighting levels but, as always, start off in area with less light and flows and gradually move toward your intended destination. Just make sure you are patient and allow plenty of time for acclimation and careful observation between moves. Such is the stuff from which coralhead success and nirvana is woven!
Feeding Considerations:
Unless you have great water quality params, don’t consider feeding your neon green hammer frag or any other coral in your quarantine system or display. Your Euphyllia frag will do just fine with proper lighting, flow and good water chemistry but if your params are good-to-great and you want to experiment with feeding suitable planktonic foods, go for it. Just plan on testing more often and stepping up the maintenance.
