Gold Hammer Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

While beginners can be successful with our online gold hammer coral frags, we often recommend that reefkeepers wait until they have achieved success with other species of LPS coral frags before investing in a gold hammer frag. Of course, if you’re just getting started, we’d love to have your business but we’d rather you bought other LPS coral frags from us first and get your water quality parameters, lighting and maintenance regimens dialed in before making this kind of an investment.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Like other types of hammer corals, our gold hammer frags are tolerant of a wide range of lighting. As always, we recommend starting your new gold hammer in an area of your quarantine tank with less intense lighting and then gradually moving it into area with medium or higher lighting levels. While you may get more intense coloration by placing your hammer in an area with higher lighting levels in your display, great care must be taken lest you cook the photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae living in the tissues of the frag.

Water Flow Preferences:

After proper acclimation, you’ll get the best polyp extension in your gold hammer frag with medium to stronger flows but pay close attention when increasing flows initially. If you begin to lose polyp extension and/or the polyp begins to shrink from the margins of its base, reduce flows or place it in an area with low flows while it recovers. Flows that are too intense will cause the polyp to shrink to protect itself and could result in dangerous stress levels.

Placement Considerations:

Because we sell our coral frags to coralheads at all levels of accomplishment and experience, we generally recommend placing your new hammer frag in an area lower in the water column than its destination so that it can be observed. If you get good extension and coloration over time, then experiment with different lighting and flow levels. Just make sure that you’re allowing plenty of time between moves to ensure that the coral can truly adjust. Patience and careful observation are the keys to coral success, young grasshopper. As always, make sure to leave plenty of space around any hammer coral, as they extend sweeper tentacles that extend well beyond the length of the polyps that pack a powerful sting.

Feeding Considerations:

It’s not absolutely necessary to feed your hammer coral directly, as the photosynthetic algae will give the host coral plenty of nutrition if the lighting is right. That said, you can achieve better growth by releasing Artemia nuaplii and other planktonic foods occasionally and letting the flow carry the food to the polyps. However, coral feeding does come with a caveat: If you feed aggressively, test your water quality aggressively and also plan on additional system maintenance. Don’t trash your WQ params!
