Stunning Hammer Coral Frags For Sale Online
Hammer corals are some of the most mesmerizing LPS corals available for coralheads today. The polyps feature translucent stalks in greens, purples, blues and other colors that end in differently colored lobes that resemble hammerheads. Some are curved slightly; others resemble sickles. But when the currents in a reef tank animate them, the effect is stunning, hypnotic and entirely lovely.
Hammer Coral Care Guide
Experience Level
Most of our online hammer coral frags (Euphyllia) are not recommended for beginners, as they require the care of a more experienced keeper to remain healthy and vibrant. However, if you have a cycled system and take good care of the health of the system and the animals living in it, you may be ready to add one or more of our Euphyllia coral frags and take your reefkeeping to the next level.

- Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C

- Calcium: 375-450ppm
- Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
- Salinity: 35ppt
- Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm

Lighting Preferences:
Although the photosynthetic and symbiotic zooxanthellae algae living in the tissue of our online hammer corals require some light to keep the coral polyps healthy, Euphyllia tend to prefer lighting in the middle to lower-middle part of the spectrum. Please bear in mind that there are several species that are categorized as hammer corals, so your mileage may vary, depending on the species of hammer coral and type of lighting on your display.
Water Flow Preferences:
For hammer corals, adjust your powerheads to provide moderate or slightly lower shifting, laminar flows. You want enough flow to animate the polyps softly as they would on a natural reef, delivering food and gently removing waste. However, the delicate tissue of the polyps will not tolerate being buffeted by current that is too strong and will retract to protect itself, so watch the polyp extension and coloration and adjust slowly and patiently from there.
Placement Considerations:
After acclimation, it’s best to start your new hammer coral frag in a somewhat sheltered location on or near the bottom. Pay close attention to the posture and turgidity of the polyps and let that inform your decisions on when and where to move them next. As always, make sure to provide enough time between moves to truly ascertain whether or not the new spot is better for your hammer frag.
Feeding Considerations:
While the zooxanthellae provide glucose and other important nutrients for the host coral, your hammer coral colonies will benefit from additional feeds of planktonic foods once or twice a week. But remember: if you’re going to feed aggressively, you had better plan on cleaning aggressively or you’ll trash your water quality and the overall health of the system and everything living in it.
