Frogspawn corals are another species of incredibly cool and pretty LPS corals from the Euphyllia genus. At some point, just about every coralhead has or has had a thriving colony of frogspawn in their reef tanks and it’s easy to see why. They just look great in any reef display. Each polyp features numerous tentacles, usually but not always green, that end in a series of irregular lobes of a different color, which makes for a very pretty frogspawn colony. When conditions are healthy and the polyps are happy, they put on quite a show as the currents animate the tentacles, causing them to softly bash into each other. The effect is hypnotic, calming, and entirely captivating.

Only bad things happen quickly in a reef aquarium, so patience, weekly water quality testing and tracking, careful attention to detail and routine maintenance are key for healthy corals, good results and steady development as a coralhead.

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Much will depend on the type of lighting you have on your display and the depth of the water column but our frogspawn frags prefer medium lighting either in the middle of the display or in an upper part of the water column just outside of the most intense direct lighting.

Water Flow Preferences:

This species of Euphyllia coral prefers medium to slightly stronger flows that animate the tentacles in the dense center of each polyp. Frogspawn won’t respond well to direct currents that are too strong, as it can damage the delicate tissue of the polyps but too little current will result in lifeless, wispy tentacles and polyps. Choose a spot with shifting laminar flows that keep the polyps softly moving in different directions.

Placement Considerations:

Frogspawn tend to be pretty aggressive, with sweeper tentacles that extend a surprising distance from the colony. Choose a location in the middle to upper-middle part of the display at first and observe for at least two weeks before making any other adjustments. Pay very close attention to discoloration or shrinking tissue on any nearby corals, clams or other sessile invertebrates, as that can indicate just how far the sweeper tentacles on your frogspawn can reach.

Feeding Considerations:

Your frogspawn frag will respond to supplemental feeding of small foods suitable for corals once or twice a week but remember that any nutrients that you introduce to your system will have to be removed by additional maintenance to keep your water quality healthy and suitable for corals.
