Healthy, Beautiful and Clean Chalice Coral Frags For Sale Online

Echinophyllia corals, commonly called chalice corals, can flatter any reef tank and thrive in locations that most coral species don’t prefer. Mostly native to the reefs off the coast of northeast Australia, chalice corals come in a wide range of color combinations. Some of the most desirable online chalice coral frags resemble the riot of colors found in abstract spatter paintings of Jackson Pollock and other painters.

Chalice Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

There are at least eight different genera of small polyp stony corals that are often described as chalice corals, so the experience level is hard to accurately categorize. However, if you’re a moderately experienced coralhead that takes conscientious care of your systems and animals and have stable water quality parameters, you’re probably going to be successful with our online chalice coral frags no matter how you describe your experience level.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Chalice corals prefer low to lower-moderate lighting levels. Lighting that is too intense will stress your chalice frags, preventing the “eyes,” or oral openings containing feeding tentacles, from opening.

Water Flow Preferences:

Medium laminar flows are the strongest that Echinophyllia frags will tolerate. Lower is probably better but given how many genera are called chalice corals, you’ll have to experiment to find the “sweet spot” for just enough flow without buffeting it with too much.

Placement Considerations:

Your best bet will be to initially place your new chalice coral frag on the substrate out of direct lighting, then slowly experiment with locations higher in the water column. Chalice corals tend to be aggressive, with sweeper tentacles that can extend well beyond the colony, so consider that whenever picking a location. The thin layer of living tissue on your chalice frag can be easily injured by other corals, so provide plenty of space and monitor closely for damage over time.

Feeding Considerations:

Chalice corals are primarily nighttime feeders and will respond well to very small amount of supplementary foods. As always, be very careful not to overfeed your chalice frag. Too much food can decompose in the feeding polyps, harming the coral and trashing your water quality.
