Favites Coral Care Guide
Experience Level
Favites corals are one of the easiest LPS corals to care for and are suitable for beginning coralheads, as they often thrive under a wide range of lighting, flow and other conditions. That said, we recommend only adding our Favites frags to systems that are fully cycled, with stable water quality parameters. Adding corals to a new system too soon is setting yourself up for disappointment. With corals of any kind, patience is always essential.
Optimal Water Quality Parameters
- Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
- pH: 8.1-8.3
- dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
- Calcium: 375-450ppm
- Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
- Salinity: 35ppt
- Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
- Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
- Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
- Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm
Lighting Preferences:
Favites frags do best under moderate lighting so after acclimation, choose a spot accordingly. Much depends on the depth of your display and the type of lighting you have but initially, choose a location somewhere in the middle and slowly adjust to more intense lighting over time.
Water Flow Preferences:
Favites corals will not tolerate strong, direct flows for very long but are tolerant of nearly all other types of current in a display. As long as there is enough shifting, laminar flow to deliver food and remove waste from the polyps without harming their delicate tissue, your new brain coral frag should thrive.
Placement Considerations:
With Favites corals, providing enough distance between them and other corals, clams and other sessile invertebrates is essential or they will use their sweeper tentacles to sting, harm and potentially kill their neighbors. These tentacles can extend several inches beyond the colony itself, so place your new Favites frag carefully.
Feeding Considerations:
Favites corals are commonly nocturnal feeders and will dilate their polyps and extend their feeding tentacles, which are different from their sweeping mesentery filaments for defense. They respond well to supplemental feeding of suitably sized coral foods once or twice a week. You may be able to get them to feed at other times by priming the food response but be careful not to overfeed and watch out for fish and inverts that will likely try to steal food from your slow-eating Favites polyps!
