Our Online Fungia Plate Corals will Thrive on the Substrate of Your Reef Display

Fungia disc corals, also commonly called disc corals or plate corals for their unique shape, are often found on the bottom of shallow reefs throughout the South Pacific and thrive in a niche preferred by few other corals. Given how many reef displays have vast expanses of clean substrate with little or nothing living on them, our Fungia corals for sale online will add color and texture where few other coral species can. The first time many coral hobbyists see a Fungia coral on the bottom of a tank with its tentacles extended toward the lighting, their only response (and the appropriate one) is, “Wow!” With so many colors and color combinations of Fungia in our selection of online corals for sale, why not add some Wow! to your display? You won’t regret it!

Fungia Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

Despite their delicate appearance, Fungia are actually a pretty good coral species for beginners, as long as their tank is cycled, their WQ parameters are close to ideal and they’re willing to test their water and perform routine maintenance regularly.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Fungia prefer lighting that is moderate to slightly lower. The photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae living in the tissue of this coral species will not tolerate intense lighting for very long, so choose a spot on the substrate of your display and closely monitor your new Fungia, paying attention to color and posture of the feeding tentacles.

Water Flow Preferences:

Fungia disc corals will do best in area with light to slightly stronger flows, which should be pretty easy to find on the bottom of your reef tank. If you don’t see any feeding tentacles extended after a couple of weeks, carefully move your disc coral further into the rockwork, with less direct flows. A note of caution: the supporting skeleton of Fungia has sharp ridges on the top and edges, which can cut the thin veneer of living tissue and result in a fatal infection if handled improperly. Take extra care when handling your plate coral to ensure you don’t damage it.

Placement Considerations:

As previously mentioned, Fungia prefer and will do well in a spot on your substrate but make sure not to place it too close to other corals and clams, as they have sweeper tentacles that can reach further than you might think!

Feeding Considerations:

Fungia will respond well to supplemental feeding as long as the chunks of food are appropriately sized. Choose very small foods that are easy for the coral to ingest and expel or it will begin to decompose in the oral cavity of the coral. You may also want to cut the top off a 2-liter soda bottle and carefully place it over your Fungia right after feeding to prevent fish, shrimp, crabs and other thieves from stealing food from this slow-eating coral.
