Stunningly Pretty Cynarina Coral Frags for Sale Online

Cynarina corals are one of the larger LPS corals and inhabit the reefs off the coast of Australia and the islands of the Indo-Pacific. Also called button corals, Cynarina specimens have a large, fleshy polyp with an oral opening in the center very much like Scolymia corals. Indeed, Cynarina polyps for sale online are often mistaken for Scolys. The photosynthetic zooxanthellae living in the tissue of Cynarina polyps provide a wide range of color morphs from vivid reds, blues, yellows and greens to subtle variations on greys and pinks, which are not as showy but no less lovely to behold.

Coral Care Guide

Experience Level

Cynarina are an excellent choice for beginners, along with coralheads at all levels of accomplishment, provided the displays they’re being acclimated to are cycled, healthy and well maintained.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Button coral frags much prefer lighting in the lower to middle range of intensity. How happy the symbiotic zooxanthellae are going to be will be largely dependent on the type(s) of lighting you have on your display and the depth of the tank. After acclimation, start off your new Cynarina coral lower than your planned final placement and adjust slowly and carefully from there.

Water Flow Preferences:

Cynarina much prefer low, indirect flows. Choose a location that slightly animates the tissue of this coral to deliver food and remove waste but monitor closely, as stronger current will abrade the delicate tissue against the stony base and surrounding rockwork.

Placement Considerations:

You may wish to initially place your new Cynarina frag on the substrate of your display or on a lower rock. While not particularly aggressive, Cynarina does expand over the course of the day and will require room for that, along with enough distance from other corals that can sting it.

Feeding Considerations:

Cynarina is typically a night feeder but you may be able to induce a food response by gently squirting thawed brine or mysis shrimp juice nearby, waiting for the feeding tentacles to deploy and carefully placing small amounts of small foods near the tentacles. As fun as it is to feed corals, take care not to overfeed your Cynarina or you could be placing new food over not-fully-digested food, severely harming your coral and creating conditions that could kill it.
