Beautiful, Distinctive Bubble Coral for Sale Online for Your Reef Display

Of all the mesmerizing LPS corals found in reef displays all over the world, few coral colonies draw the eye so quickly and easily as a large bubble coral colony. The polyps of Plerogyra colonies feature large, balloon-like sacs of water that gently waft and bash against each other in the current, creating an altogether pleasing and hypnotic effect that rewards the eye and drops the blood pressure of the viewer like few other coral species. Better still, our online bubble coral frags are easy to care for and are a good choice for beginners looking for fairly hardy LPS corals for their reef displays.

Bubble Coral (Plerogyra) Care Guide

Experience Level

As we mentioned, bubble coral frags are a great choice for coralheads just starting out with growing coral frags into thriving colonies. However, before you buy one or more of our Plerogyra frags, make sure that your reef tank is cycled, with stable water quality parameters. No matter how easy a coral species may be to care for, corals are, by their nature, fairly delicate critters and adding coral frags too early will likely end up in disappointment.

Optimal Water Quality Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-78F, 22-25C
  • pH: 8.1-8.3
  • dKH: 7-11 (125-200ppm CaCO3 equivalent)
  • Calcium: 375-450ppm
  • Magnesium: 1275-1350ppm
  • Salinity: 35ppt
  • Ammonia (NH3): less than 0.1ppm
  • Nitrite (NO2): less than 0.2ppm
  • Nitrate (NO3): less than 0.2ppm
  • Phosphates (PO4): less than 0.03ppm

Lighting Preferences:

Bubble corals tend to do best with lighting in the middle or lower-middle part of the intensity scale. Lighting that is too intense will stress the symbiotic zooxanthellae living in the coral tissue. Lighting that is too subdued will starve it. In most reef displays, bubble corals will do well somewhere on the substrate in direct lighting.

Water Flow Preferences:

You’ll also want to choose a location that has mild flows that animate but do not bash the polyps together too violently. Flows that are direct or otherwise too strong will cause your bubble coral colony to retract to prevent damage to the delicate tissues. Soft flows that easily push the bubbles back and forth will be best for the colony and provide optimal colony health and growth.

Placement Considerations:

It is good that bubble corals tend to do best on the substrate, as they are an aggressive species with sweeper tentacles that can extend well beyond the stony base of the colony. When placing your new Plerogyra frag, be very mindful of clams, soft corals and anything nearby that can be stung by the long reach of the colony.

Feeding Considerations:

If your water chemistry and system maintenance are good, your bubble corals will respond well to supplemental feeding once or twice a week. Just remember that overfeeding your coral can stress and perhaps kill your colony by providing more food that it can easily digest and export as waste. This leads to decomposing food in the tissue, along with bacterial infections and degraded water quality, so plan accordingly and go easy on the supplemental feeds.
